LISTENING COMES FIRST.
We recognize the rights, knowledge and leadership of Indigenous Peoples. Our work begins with listening, learning and building together—supporting each community’s language goals in a way that honours its culture, priorities and self-determination.
Understand your community’s priorities.
Collaborate with language speakers and educators.
Develop learning opportunities shaped by community goals.
We recognize the historical harm experienced by Indigenous communities. Our commitment begins with humility: listening, respecting community leadership and working together toward the future each community chooses.
A partnership may focus on collaborative Indigenous-language content development, access to Smash’s existing French, English or Spanish learning pathways, or both. The community’s priorities guide what is relevant; each arrangement is discussed together.
TWO AREAS OF EXPERTISE. ONE SHARED PURPOSE.
Every language carries its own history, meaning and ways of understanding the world. Our role is not to decide what should be taught, but to help communities transform their chosen language content into purposeful learning experiences.
Language, vocabulary, stories, cultural knowledge, learning priorities, appropriate permissions and content review.
Curriculum sequencing, instructional design, scaffolding, language-learning activities, practice opportunities and progressive skill development.
Together, we build learning pathways that reflect your community’s goals.
HOW WE CAN HELP
Every community’s journey is unique. We can explore learning tools and resources shaped around different languages, age groups, learning goals and teaching contexts.
Work with community language speakers and educators to develop structured, community-informed learning sequences.
Explore ways to bring local voices, stories, vocabulary and approved cultural knowledge into meaningful learning activities.
Discuss learning resources for classroom, community and independent-learning contexts, based on your project’s needs.
Plan for content review, future updates and long-term development as your language project evolves.
Discuss a sequence for your school or community language program, shaped around the ages, language knowledge and communication goals of your learners.
Explore content for people reconnecting with the language, learning at home or preparing to use it together in everyday life.
Plan lesson organization, oral models and guided practice with the language speakers and educators your community identifies.
A PATH SHAPED TOGETHER
Understand your community’s goals, learners, language priorities and available materials.
Combine community-approved language content with structured instructional design and meaningful learning activities.
Discuss content review, access, responsibilities, implementation and potential future development.

A SHARED COMMITMENT
By combining the expertise of Indigenous language speakers and educators with thoughtful instructional design and digital learning tools, we can explore meaningful opportunities to learn, use and keep Indigenous languages alive.
A FEW GOOD QUESTIONS
Indigenous Nations, communities, language programs and organizations interested in developing learning content can contact us. Tell us about the community, language and people who should be involved.
Yes. A partnership can involve collaboratively developing content for a language Smash does not currently offer. Your community and Smash define the language-specific goals, materials, responsibilities and development scope together. This is a separately scoped project, distinct from the existing French, English and Spanish curricula.
Yes. Smash has already collaborated with one Indigenous group. We discuss each new project on its own terms.
Your community decides. Community-designated language speakers, educators and knowledge holders guide content selection, accuracy, cultural appropriateness, review and approval. Preferred terminology, language varieties, cultural protocols and content permissions are discussed before development.
Smash contributes curriculum-development and instructional-design expertise to organize approved materials into progressive learning experiences. Together, we agree who participates and how content will be reviewed and approved.
It’s a collaborative process. Your community provides or approves the language and cultural knowledge, while Smash helps shape the pedagogical structure—how learners are introduced to concepts, practise new skills and build toward meaningful communication.
The specific responsibilities, materials, permissions and review process are agreed upon for each project.
Development pricing and timelines depend on the agreed scope, available materials, review process and responsibilities. These are discussed with the partner before a project is defined.
